Research Study

First, we assess the prevalence in treated schools to determine treatment protocols. To monitor the program, we track infection, nutritional status and anemia in 500 treated children.

The research program answers another important policy question--is it effective to treat a whole district based on its average prevalence? Can disease be controlled in areas of that district where the burden is much higher?

To answer this question, we split the schools in the Nyadire region, where prevalence is estimated to be much higher than the district average, into two groups and treat one in accordance with district prevalence and the other, in accordance with local prevalence. We then compare rates of reinfection and indicators of nutritional status.

This research is done primarily in collaboration with Nyadire Mission Hospital, National Institute for Health Research, Biomedical Research and Training Institute, and the University of Zimbabwe.
