1) Acute malnutriton: also known as wasting, low weight for height
2) Chronic malnutrition: also known as stunting, low height for age
3) Underweight: low weight for age

Acute malnutrition, or wasting, is the most deadly. Its precise causes are disputed, but generally it is caused by extremely limited nutrient intake over a short period of tmie. Over a long period of time it invariably leads to death.
